Feelings and Similar Items Vol. II is a collaborative book between photographers Alex Thebez and Marisa Gertz. The project was started by Thebez with Vol. I as "a way to create coherent narratives from seemingly disparate images made through a compulsive desire to photograph". The 60 page book, printed in a limited edition of 200 by Lintroller, does just that. Despite featuring images dating from 2011 to 2014 and depicting cities from around the world, Feelings and Similar Items Vol. II feels like a singular narrative of space, time, and place.
An entirely image based book, Feelings and Similar Items Vol. II travels with the two photographers through eleven cities—New York, Singapore, Jakarta, Tokyo, Boston, Long Beach Island, West Simsbury, Cannon Beach, Paris, Rome, and Miami. The viewer sees glimpses of light, food, water, trinkets, textured textiles, reclining figures, and dense flora, among other seemingly transitory moments. Full-bleed pages as well as images framed in white, provide an evolving narrative, keeping the viewer engaged through consistent change. There's an energy and sense of movement that translates to the pages of this small book, alongside a meditation on feelings, stillness, travel, familiarity, and distance. It's that movement and difference from photograph-to-photograph that makes the book compelling, unique, and cohesive.
Alex Thebez is a a New York based Indonesian photographer, and a former Capricious intern. Alex is also part of the GIFRIENDS collective and a member of Lintroller. Marisa Gertz is a New York based photographer and net artist. "She is interested in the way that the imagery we create influences our perception of the world around us, especially through the internet." (All quotes from Lintroller)
